Jargon Buster: Partner or Business Partner?

The independent motor trade is often a family affair. Make sure you understand the difference between 'Partner' and 'Business Partner' - it can make a difference to the cover provided under your motor trade insurance.

Our experience confirms that many of you work with your wife, husband or common-law spouse. This can make the distinction between ‘Partner’ and ‘Business Partner’ difficult to understand, but there are consequences of getting it wrong. Your Business Partner is a joint policyholder and will have full cover under the policy, on the same basis as the main proposer or insured. They will most likely be covered to drive the vehicles for Motor Trade use as well as Social Domestic & Pleasure use. Your spouse may also be your Business Partner, in which case they would be treated as such. But if they play no part in the business, the cover available to them will in all likelihood be restricted to Social, Domestic & Pleasure use and, in some circumstances, to certain types of vehicle only.

If you are at all unsure, please do get in touch. We are always happy to assist.
