Motor Trade Insurance for the Independent Motor Trade Professional

On this page:

Motor trade insurance is a generic term used to refer to various different types of insurance typically required by those involved in and around the motor trade. Whether that be the repair and servicing of vehicles, vehicle sales or accessory fitters, the common theme is the need for insurance that covers any vehicle in the ‘care, custody or control’ of the individual or company.

“Just to say thank you for all the years of great service you have given me helping my business going through good times and bad times”

What does ‘care, custody or control’ actually mean?

Any vehicle used on the roads is required to have insurance in place that meets the minimum requirements of the Road Traffic Act. A typical insurance policy will only cover a vehicle owned by the policyholder, not one in their temporary care, custody or control. Any vehicle left with a motor trader for work to be undertaken, whether it is driven on the roads, or just parked on the road, is likely to be deemed to be in their ‘care, custody or control’ and hence require insurance that meets the terms of the Road Traffic Act. Motor trade road risks insurance meets this requirement.

What are the different types of motor trade cover available?

Motor trade road risks Insurance: designed to provide a motor trader with the minimum level of insurance required to meet the needs of the Road Traffic Act. Cover can be on a Third Party only, Third Party Fire & Theft or Comprehensive basis. Extensions to cover vehicles in transit, vehicles kept at commercial premises or to protect a no claims bonus are available. For part time motor traders, cover can normally also be included for the other occupation.
