What is Mechanic Insurance?

Also known as Mechanic Business Insurance, this cover is designed to protect you as a motor mechanic, your tools, the place you work from, the cars you’re fixing, and the people around you.

With Car Mechanic Insurance, you can get on with the job knowing that if there was an incident – from tools being taken to a flood in your garage – you have the cover to bounce back quickly.

More about our Mechanic Insurance

Who needs Mechanic Insurance?

You need this cover if you’re a motor mechanic or operate a garage where motor mechanics work. It’s vital that you, your equipment, the cars you’re working on, and the people around you are covered if there’s an incident and you need to make a claim.

Mechanic’s Insurance is suitable for both those that work on vehicles from premises and for those who go out to fix or service vehicles at a customer’s location. Whatever the job and whatever the car issue, you’ll need a policy that protects you wherever you and your equipment is situated.

Is Mechanic Insurance a legal requirement?

Some elements of Mechanic Insurance are required by law. These include Employers’ Liability Cover if your business employs people and Road Risks Insurance if you drive on public roads.

Other elements of the cover are usually strongly suggested, but not normally legally required. This includes liability cover, tool cover, machinery cover, or cover for your buildings and contents.

Having a robust insurance policy is essential to the smooth-running of your business.

Without adequate cover, if your tools go missing, a car in your care is damaged, or there’s a problem in your workshop, your business might suffer. It can cost you money, and it may even affect your reputation – so putting the correct cover in place goes far beyond a legal obligation.

What is Mechanic Public Liability Insurance?

Mechanic Public Liability Insurance offers protection against third-party claims following accidental injuries or property damage. This cover is often regarded one of the most critical for those operating in the motor trade industry.

If a claim is made against your business, Public Liability Insurance for mechanics helps you fund any legal fees or compensations costs that you might be liable for.

You might need this cover if:

  • You damage a customer’s car whilst working on it
  • A member of the public trips over one of your tools or pieces of machinery
  • A false claim is made

Mechanic Public Liability Insurance is usually your best defence against this type of risk. Without it, you’d personally need to cover the cost of claims, potentially placing a huge financial burden on your business.

Can I get Mechanic Insurance if I don’t have premises?

Yes, you can get Mechanic Insurance without premises. Road Runner has vast experience designing policies for mechanics who work at a customer’s address and who offer roadside repair services. And if your status changes and you do commence work from a garage or permanent workshop, we can help change that element of your policy to reflect this change to your premises.
