What are the top 10 modern day classic cars?

By Road Runner
Classic Aston Martin

There are certain cars back in the day that were deemed great cars even when they were first released. Roll the clock forward a few years and cars from the 1990s to early 2000s are already deemed to be modern-day classics.

With these vehicles still very useable and holding great appeal in terms of looks, exclusivity and not least, rising values, we list 10 cars that could be deemed a modern classic:

Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

A fast V8-powered saloon with massive power and high drama which is available for less than £20,000.

BMW M3 E45

These were a very popular car in their day, with the ability to rev to an astonishing 7,900 rpm whilst shifting through the gears. This car has it all – fast, fun and practical, what’s not to like?

Nissan Skyline GTR-R33

Surely a petrol head’s dream drive? Gaining notoriety off the back of the Fast & Furious films, this is a relatively rare car with demand increasing. While it may not be to everyone’s taste, with the move to the production of modern electric vehicles, this is a reminder of how cars could be made.

Volkswagen Golf R32 MkIV

The car the GTI should have been, with a V6 engine, 250 bhp and four-wheel drive system, this was a great hot hatch of its day. With big powerful engines being put into hatchbacks a thing of the past, and clean low mileage examples likely to become harder to find, this is a sound investment.

Lotus Elise S1

Launched at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, this is a car that was a brilliant sports car yet economical to drive. With every year that passes, the series 1 Elise becomes more and more of an icon.

Porsche Carrera GT

This car comes from a generation of hypercars we’ll never see the likes of again. Its features are impressive:

  • Engine 5773cc 68-degree V10
  • Power 604 BHP
  • And claimed 3.7 Seconds 0-62

Why wouldn’t you want one? However, you’d need deep pockets to afford it, with a price tag of over £321,000 when it was released in 2005.

Subaru Impreza Turbo

A very popular vehicle in the mid- to late 90s with great performance and excellent handling, all at a relatively affordable price. With a fantastic record in rallying, a good clean original example is hard to find and has therefore become an increasingly desirable modern classic car to own.

Porsche Boxster 986

This mid-engine sports car that was launched in 1996 is a fantastic car. With great looks and handling, this was a vehicle that allowed more people into the world of Porsche ownership than might otherwise have done before its arrival. With great styling and timeless looks, this can currently be bought for as little as £4,000.

Aston Martin DB7

Surely one of the nicest looking Aston Martins to come off the production line. Everything about this car just seems to personify class, and with the added link to James Bond firmly embedded, this is a vehicle plenty of people would love to say they own.

Audi RS4

Even after more than 15 years after its introduction, this remains one of the best Audis. It looked great, was well made and is still relatively affordable.
